✅ Top 5 Tips to Pass Your SIA Exam on the First Attempt

Updated: 4 days ago

Passing your SIA licence-linked exam is a key step towards starting a career in the security industry. Whether you’re training to become a Door Supervisor or a Security Officer, preparing properly can make all the difference — and help you avoid the stress of resits.

Here are 5 practical tips to help you pass your SIA exam first time.

1. 📘 Know What to Expect in the Exam

Each SIA course ends with one or more multiple-choice assessments. These exams test your understanding of:

  • The law and your responsibilities as a security professional

  • Conflict management and physical intervention (for Door Supervisors)

  • Working in the private security industry

Top tip: Ask your training provider for a course overview and sample questions, so nothing takes you by surprise on exam day.

2. 🧠 Use the Learning Materials Provided

A good training centre (like SWBM Academy) provides study booklets, videos, and handouts — all included in your course fee. Don’t leave them unopened.

Review daily, even if just for 20–30 minutes. Reading through key terms, rights, and legal definitions before class helps everything sink in faster.

3. ✅ Attend All the Sessions and Stay Engaged

SIA courses are short and intensive — usually just a few days — so every minute counts.

  • Ask questions

  • Take notes

  • Take part in roleplay or discussions

Even experienced learners benefit from refreshing procedures and legislation. Active learners tend to retain more and perform better in the exam.

4. 💬 Practise Multiple-Choice Technique

Since the exams are made up of multiple-choice questions, get used to the format. Most questions will:

  • Give you 4 options

  • Only one will be fully correct

  • Some answers may be “nearly right” — watch out

Practice makes perfect. Use mock tests or free online quizzes to simulate exam pressure.

5. 🧘‍♂️ Arrive Prepared and Relaxed

Being well-rested, hydrated, and on time on the day of your exam can improve your focus and memory. Don’t cram the night before — get a good night’s sleep instead.

Bring: photo ID, pen, and any paperwork your provider asks for.

🚀 Bonus: Free Resits at SWBM Academy

Even with good preparation, nerves happen. That’s why at SWBM Academy, we offer free unlimited resits — just in case. But with the right preparation, you likely won’t need them.
