If a learner is looking to upgrade their licence from a Security Guarding to a Door Supervisor, this would not be done by them completing the top up qualification.
In order to do this the learner would have to skip the identical units that the SO and DS course share, which is Principles of Working in the Private Security Industry and the Conflict Management units.
This would mean they would only have to complete training and assessments for the Principles of working as a Door Supervisor and Physical Intervention units.
Please note however they would only be able to do this if they have completed the new SIA qualifications which launched in April 2021. If they hold the older SIA qualifications, they will need to complete the full training for the Door Supervisor qualification.
YOU NEED A SIA DOOR SUPERVISOR LICENCE TO DO TOP UP TRAINING.
From today (1 October 2021) all Door Supervisor and Security Officer licence holders will need a First Aid qualification and the new top-up training before they renew their licence. The top-up training requirements will only affect existing Door Supervisor and Security Officer licence holders when they come to renew their licence. This means that these changes will roll out over the course of the next three years. Book Now
Yes, as long as your SIA licence has not been expired for more than 3 years.

In line with the SIA’s requirements, all learners undertaking a security qualification with our Centre should produce evidence of a qualification equivalent to those listed by the SIA, or alternatively, are required to undertake and pass the initial English language tests that have been provided.
If you hold a door supervisor licence but do not work or intend to work on licensed premises (where alcohol consumed – pubs, bars, nightclubs, etc.), you can choose to switch to security guard/officer licence by completing Security Officer Top Up Training.
You will have an option to downgrade your licence upon renewing your licence. You may wish to speak to your employer about this.
Please consider the day-to-day duties of your job that you currently do and/or intend to do in the future. If your work involves guarding licensed premises (such as a pub or a club) you will need to renew your door supervisor licence and attend Door Supervisor Training.
Criminal Record Indicator
SIA criminal record indicator will ask you questions about you and your criminal record. It will then use your answers to estimate whether you will pass our criminality checks.
The result shown by this tool is an estimate, not a guarantee. This is because:
· SIA do not check the details you enter - if they are not accurate then the result shown by this tool will be wrong
· SIA take account of the time since your sentence restrictions ended – so the indicator could correctly show that SIA would refuse your application today, but by the time you apply our decision might be different
· SIA can treat an offence not listed in this tool as relevant if in our view it affects your suitability to hold a licence - you can find out more about this in SIA Get Licensed booklet
· SIA take all sexual offences into account regardless of when your sentence restrictions ended
· SIA take all terrorism offences into account regardless of when your sentence restrictions ended
If you have sexual or terrorism offences on your record, SIA may ask you for further information about these offences. Remember that there are other checks you will need to pass.

WRITING INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO APPLY FOR SIA LICENCE
You need to register on SIA website. Steps to apply for a Door Supervisor SIA licence (please see the attached files too):
a) Create a personal online account on self-service website.
b) Fill in and submit the application online*. You will be asked for certain personal information - for example, where you have lived within the last 5 years.
c) After you submitted your application online, SIA will ask you to go to a UK post office** to complete your application. You will need to take certain documents with you (SIA will tell you which ones when you submit your application). Not all post offices offer this service – please check the post office website for details on which ones do.
d) The post office staff will check and return your documents, take a digital photograph of you and take payment of the application fee.
If an employer or another business wishes to pay the application fee on employees’ behalf, they can do this online using SIA Licence Pay Only service (please see attached file).
f) You may need to send your documents to SIA as well as taking them to the post office. They will tell you if this is the case when you submit your application.
For further guidelines, please see please see SIA website. Hope, it helps.

3 years
Applicants will need to get a recognised qualification by taking a training course and passing the assessments in order to get a front-line licence in the following sectors:
Cash and Valuables in Transit
Close Protection
Door Supervision
Public Space Surveillance (CCTV)
Security Guard
Vehicle Immobilisers (only in Northern Ireland).
To meet the criteria needed for a front-line licence:
the Applicant must have full certification (i.e. fully passed the qualification);
the certification must be from one of the listed qualifications;
the qualification must have been offered by an endorsed awarding organisation (like our Awarding Body – Highfield);
and the qualification must have been achieved no more than three years before the licence application.
Where an individual’s licence has expired, but he or she wants to apply for a new one, then SIA will accept that person’s qualification as long as there has been three years or less between the previous licence expiring and the application being made for the new one.
For example: the SIA would accept a qualification for a licence application in January 2022 if that qualification was achieved in January 2017, a licence was granted in February 2017, and the licence expired in February 2020.
This is because there is three years or less between the old licence expiring and the new being applied for. There are no qualification requirements for a non-front-line licence.
From 1 October 2021 some Licence Holders have needed to take top-up training to renew a licence.
First Aid training requirements for door supervisors and security officers (guards) became compulsory since 1 April 2021. All leaners wishing to start the SIA courses must complete the training and obtain First Aid Qualification before starting a course.
We can accept a first aid qualification if all of the following statements are true:
It meets the requirements of HSE regulations.
It is valid for at least another 12 months from the start of the SIA licence-linked training.
We have made reasonable efforts to confirm that it complies with all other requirements.
We have made reasonable efforts to confirm that the practical elements of training (such as CPR, the application of a tourniquet, treating burns and eye injuries) were delivered and assessed face to face.
If you have not got First Aid qualification, not to worry, we have SIA course package deals with Accredited First Aid Qualification for you.
For more information of First Aid requirements can be found on the SIA website, CLICK HERE TO ACCESS THE LINK.
