Can You Renew an Expired SIA Licence Without Repeating the Full Course?

If your SIA Door Supervisor licence has expired, you may be wondering if you need to complete the full qualification again — or if a refresher course is enough to get licensed.

The good news is: you may not need to start from scratch.

The SIA has clarified the rules on using older qualifications and who is eligible to renew their licence with a refresher only.

🔍 Refresher Required for All Renewals

According to the SIA:

“You must hold the ‘Level 2 Award for Door Supervisors in the Private Security Industry (Refresher)’ qualification as well as the licence-linked qualification you already have.”

This means that whether your licence is still active or has recently expired, you must complete the refresher course before your next application or renewal.

But what if your licence expired years ago? Do you still qualify?

📅 What If Your Licence Has Expired?

If your old SIA licence expired less than 3 years ago, you may be eligible to renew using just the refresher qualification.

✅ You can apply using the refresher if:

• Your previous SIA licence expired less than 3 years ago, and

• You now complete the updated Level 2 Refresher course

This applies even if your original training was the older qualification (pre-April 2021), which is no longer valid on its own.

❌ You must complete the full course again if:

• Your previous licence expired more than 3 years ago, or

• You never held an SIA licence within 3 years of completing your original Door Supervisor training

In these cases, the SIA will not accept an outdated qualification, even if you complete a refresher. You will need to enrol on the full current Door Supervisor course.
