Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering

Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering is accredited and has been developed to protect customers, brand reputation and profits. The objective of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment in catering role, or to support a role in the workplace.

It helps them to understand their legal responsibilities and know what constitutes best practice in regards to controlling food safety hazards, controlling temperatures, food storage, food preparation, personal hygiene and premises cleaning. Its topics are regarded by the Foods Standards Agency as being important to maintaining good practice in the production of safe food.

This qualification is ideal for anyone working in the catering and hospitality industry (or those about to start work in the industry), such as:

Understand how individuals can take personal responsibility for food safety

  • Identifying the importance of food safety procedures, safe food handling and avoiding unsafe behaviour

  • Identifying how to report food safety hazards, infestations and food spoilage

  • Recognising key legal responsibilities of food handlers

Understand the importance of food handlers keeping themselves clean and hygienic

  • The importance of personal hygiene in food safety including their role in reducing the risk of contamination

  • Identifying effective personal hygiene practices relating to protective clothing, hand washing, personal illness, cuts, wounds, food handling practices

Understand the importance of keeping work areas clean and hygienic

  • How to keep the work area and equipment clean and tidy, by following procedures relating to cleaning methods, safe use of chemicals, storage of cleaning chemicals.

  • The importance of safe waste disposal

  • The importance of pest control

Identify the importance of keeping food products safe

  • Identifying main risks to food safety from contamination and cross-contamination from microbial, chemical, physical and allergenic hazards

  • Identifying safe food handling and temperature control practices for delivery, storage, date marking and stock rotation

Results

Results are available within 10 working days of the exams. HIGH PASS RATE

Certification

Successful candidates will receive a Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering from a recognised awarding body within England and Wales. It is valid for a period of 3 years and can be renewed by attending another Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering course.

How is the qualification assessed?

This qualification is assessed by multiple-choice examination (Learners must complete 20 questions within 45 minutes and achieve a pass mark of 60%, 12 out of 20) OR open response workbook.
